Well this weekend I went to Centennial Park to see Sara Watkins and Bela Fleck play. It was the first time I’ve seen Sara play solo before, and it was excellent. Even cooler was that her brother Sean came out to play guitar for her. Then Bela Fleck came out and played and amazed everyone as usual. Didn’t hurt either that it was a beautiful day, and that I had some awesome company. Great day for music.

This morning I went with a friend to a used clothing sale to benefit the works in Haiti. It was $5 for a bag to fit whatever clothes you could into it. Even though it started at 7am, there were several students there. I’m so lucky to be at a place where this type of thing is the norm. Thanks to those who had this idea. God is constantly working.

Well dad and I went to hear the Time Jumpers, a western swing band, again tonight downtown at the Station Inn. If you haven’t heard them before and you’re in Nashville on a Monday night, do yourself a favor and go hear them. Their band consists of the best musicians I’ve ever seen in a live show before. And the good part about it…$10 to get in! The band consists of local musicians who have played on the road for several years, as well as having been in the studio on just about every big album that comes out of Nashville. The guy that plays steel for them who I met tonight, Paul Franklin, who also plays with the Players (Brent Mason, John Hobbs, Eddie Bayers, Michael Rhodes), won the steel player of the year award in 2009. The guitar player, Andy Reiss, is…well I’ll just put it this way: he plays a 1966 Gibson double cutaway hollowbody through a 1948 Fender Proamp, for those of you that play. The accordion player has officially made the accordion cool in my book. The fiddle players, drummer, and bass player are all very legit as well. I encourage you to check them out, at least on the web of you can’t make it to a show.

PS: I’ll warn you that after listening to them you’ll buy a bunch of jazz/swing music, but you’ll love it :)

album review

So it’s been a couple months now since the new Mayer album has come out now, and I didn’t really feel like I could say much until listening to it and breaking it down. However, I still don’t feel like this will be a complete review seeing as this album has still only been out for a couple months, but I wanted to give it a shot anyway.

First of all, it’s so cool so see the artist that has been and still is the main influence behind my style and tone try something totally different than he has ever done before. I’m sure he knew going into this album that many wouldn’t buy it because it’s so different, but that’s what makes him JM. Secondly, it’s also commendable that he waited till the exact time to release his next studio project, even though it did take a little over three years. His timing was and Steve’s business, not the fans’.

Let’s look at the album. I think John has finally found his general area of guitar tone now. Sure he’s done the blues licks for a while now, but the guitar in this album is lyrical. He’s finally caught on with Clapton now and is looking for the voice inside the guitar (not that Continuum wasn’t lyrical). It may all sound very acoustic-like, but each song has its own language/tone. Take War of My Life for example. Great lyrics, great instrumental blend, and not to mention the perfect pitch for John’s voice. Each song on Battle Studies is a piece of art, molded and crafted to sound like he wanted it to.

Just out of curiosity, I checked out a few reviews on iTunes a couple days ago. I read a review on there totally tearing apart Battle Studies due to its lack of crazy blues licks and sorry lyrics. The gentleman clearly doesn’t purchase any other music other than what’s on the top ten on the iTunes home page.

Music isn’t about who can play the best solos and sound exactly like SRV and Jimmy Page. In fact, neither one of them started playing even close to what they would record and play later on life. Music is about what the artist is feeling at the time and who or what they want to write about. It’s about feeling, deep thought, or even a simple instrumental riff that sounds like what he/she is trying to say. Take Jack White for example. Do you really think he cares what people think about him? I’d be highly surprised of he did. He writes what he wants to, just like John (if you don’t know what I mean, just buy a White Stripes album, you won’t regret it I promise).

So, I guess I’ve gone on one of my little music rants again instead of my album review. However, it’s exactly what I wanted to say. If you don’t like what your friends listen to, don’t listen to it. I can’t stand the music my room mate listens to and he doesn’t like a lot of my tastes either. But by talking about our music interests, we’ve found other stuff that we both ended up liking that we never would have found had it never come up.

So here’s a challenge for you. When you have a free hour or so this week, look through the top selling music on iTunes. Then, look at the music on your library and really think about why you listen to what you listen to. Compare the two and you would probably be surprised (and please don’t include rap by the way: if you can understand that garbage in the first place then you’re a lost cause, sorry). Then find some friends that don’t listen to the music you listen to and ask them about it. You’ll probably find that you end up liking a little bit of it.

…art, music, literature good. some of the classes im taking this semester make me wonder why people believe that certain things are good. most people only listen to music thats popular cause its on the radio or the top chart on itunes. just earlier i saw the current top chart on itunes. number two was miley cyrus. how is it that people that write because they truly love the music, and constantly change because they constantly learn and understand are the least popular? guess ill never know, but at least i can choose listen to people that write the music they love because its their passion and not a job, like the majority of the ‘music’ out there
